Brain Waves and Where do the Eyes Look?
Do people with ASDs look at a picture the same way as those without an ASD? Using EEGs and eye-tracking to measure brainwaves and gaze, we are testing whether people with ASDs, and their family members, have the same brain-wave patterns as people without ASDs.

A hairnet containing 128 small sensors is put on the participant’s head to record brain electrical activity. Once the hairnet is in place, the participant is asked to watch a TV monitor as it shows pictures of faces, objects, and animals. The whole procedure takes less than forty minutes.

Smell Studies – Sniff Test: What do YOU Smell?
Do people with ASDs, and their family members, identify smells the same as those without ASDs?

Savant and Special Skills
Do people with ASDs and their family members have special skills and, if so, what are these? This study involves completing a questionnaire.

Genetics and Environmental Factors and risk for ASDs
To identify the genetic and environmental factors that increase the risk for ASDs, we need to examine both the genes and environmental factors in all individuals. To study a participant’s genes, we need a sample of saliva or spit. All family members are invited to spit into a tube or small container. We are developing a series of questionnaires about environmental factors and you will be notified when these are available on-line later this summer. The genetic studies are also important for correlating with the results from the above studies and other questionnaires that are on-line at: www.AutismResearch.ca.

CHILDREN AT RISK:  2010 RAFFLE
Sunday, June 13 turned out to be a fabulous day for the Autism Community Annual Family Picnic - it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the BBQ, water play, Infatables, Fish Pond, Cookie Decorating, Bubble Play, Pick n' Pay, Balloon Toss and much more!  Many, many thanks to all the Volunteers who made this possible - especially Steve & Stephanie (loading/unloading, delivery  and set-up of supplies) as well as Mike (BBO pick-up and return), ticket sellers Alicja & Yves, Pick n' Pay Hazel, Cookie Decorating  MaryAnn & Olga , Kelly on Draw-Detail, Irma on Fish Pond, Liz/Julie & Friends on Raffle tickets and full-time cook Dan Oickle - not to mention many other Volunteers who jumped in to help at the Inflatbles, BBQ and other areas of need (please excuse not knowing everyone's name!)

As you are aware, we also did the drawing of the Children at Risk 15th Annual Raffle tickets at the Picnic - great excitement at the start with the First Prize winner only having purchased her tickets shortly before the draw!!  Attached you will find a list of the Winners and Ticket Numbers - if you are printing this out, keep in mind it is set up on legal-sized paper (with 44 draws in all).  Although we did not sell out the Raffle this year (we had printed 6,000 tickets instead of 5,000) we did sell more than last year and will bring in a profit of over $8,000!!  This will go a long way in helping Children at Risk continue our supports, as funds have been much more difficult to raise over the past year with our challenged economy!  Hat's Off to all those who purchased and/or sold tickets and Congratulations to the Winners!!
